In this post I want to share with you everything that I know about Shopify and how you can get started using it to make some money right away.
Before I dive into the money-making details, let’s take a look at some beginner information about Shopify itself.
What is Shopify?
You’ve probably heard of it before, or at least it’s likely that you’ve visited a website using Shopify as its storefront, but it’s basically a website that you can use to sell your products online.
The website offers everything you need to get started selling your own products and it will provide you with hosting, a store design, payment gateways, a domain for your website, and anything else that you would possibly need for starting a successful store on the internet.
You don’t have to worry about it being spammy or not being trusted by other people visiting, it’s a very professional platform for e-commerce users and if you’re just getting started with selling products online then it’s definitely what you’re going to want to use for the least amount of headache and hassle.
There are quite a few people using Shopify these days, at least a hundred thousand people, and this includes very popular and well-known companies that would rather use the platform than design their own and have to manage everything separately.
When you’re using Shopify the only thing you really have to worry about is having products that people want to buy and driving traffic to your website so that you have people to sell your stuff to.
Shopify will take care of the rest so as long as you have done the legwork and you have a good product that people actually want then you’re going to be able to make money.
You also have a few choices when it comes to other aspects of selling products online and you get a lot of input when it comes to your shipping costs, product descriptions, and general appearance of your online store.
There are hundreds of different professionally-designed themes that you can choose from depending on how you want your storefront to look and if you don’t like one then you can very easily try out another until you find one that you’re happy with.
At this point you might be wondering why it all seems so easy and why Shopify is willing to do all the work for you.
What you want to keep in mind is that starting up your own store is going to cost you a little bit of money and there are recording fees for using Shopify but these are much more reasonable than if you were to set up your own e-commerce store.
If you wanted to start an eCommerce site on your own you would have to sign up for web hosting, pay for a theme or have one designed, figure out which plugins you need to use, make sure everything is set up properly, arrange payment processors, and the list goes on and on.
Even if you’re planning on selling your products on websites like Amazon or Ebay then you’re still going to have to deal with fees as well as commission that they take on your sales and everything is just going to cut into your own bottom line which leaves you with less money in the end.
How Much Does it Cost to Sell on Shopify?
The way that Shopify works is by offering a few different packages depending on the kind of volume and support you need.
For beginners, I recommend starting with the basic package and upgrading whenever you see fit.
Each of the packages has different fees and basically the better package you have the less you’re going to have to pay out.
There are essentially two different fees you’ll need to consider:
- A commission percentage on your turnover (sale)
- A charge for the payment gateway
With the Basic account you’ll pay a 2.9% credit card rate.
With the Standard (Shopify) account you’ll pay a 2.5% credit card rate.
With the Advanced account you’ll pay a 2.25% credit card rate.
There is also a 30 cents surcharge added to credit card payment processing, although the rate might be higher for those purchasing something outside of the US or not using a US card.
There is also a transaction fee from Shopify themselves and they range from 0.5% up to 2% depending on the account that you have.
One thing I want to mention is that you can avoid paying any transaction fees at all if you use Shopify Payments, which handles the transactions for you and comes with a 0% commission fee.
I find this to be very reasonable for the quality of e-commerce platform that they provide and for such a hands-off venture it’s really not an unreasonable commission at all.
Anybody on the fence about using Shopify is able to use a free 14-day trial so that you can try out the platform and see whether you like it or not.
It’s a good idea to sign up for the free trial and run it like you would run a normal online store so that if you find it easy to use or you’re getting a lot of sales then you can easily upgrade to a better monthly package.
I don’t think that there are any other eCommerce platforms that offer such a great fee rate for using their website to sell products online so I definitely recommend checking out Shopify if that’s what you’re interested in doing.

How to Start Selling on Shopify
To start selling products or services on Shopify you’re going to need to create an account.
To create your account, visit the Shopify homepage here.
Then click on the “Get started” button in the top right of the page.
Alternatively, you can enter your email address on the home page followed by clicking on the green “Get started” button.
When asked, choose a password and a store name.
Don’t worry if you’re having trouble naming your Shopify store – you can always change it later.
Continue to follow the rest of the sign-up prompts.
Make sure to answer honestly and click the box if you happen to be setting up the store for one of your clients.
After answering the first question you might get a drop-down where Shopify is going to offer to help you with a few different aspects of your store creation.
Feel free to click off any of the boxes that you’re interested in and once you’re done with everything click on the green “Next” button at the bottom.
On the next page you going to have to add your address and personal information so that Shopify is able to pay you whenever you start selling products.
Add all of your relevant information and then click on through to the next page on the button at the bottom that says “Enter my store”.
Now you’re going to be on the homepage of your Shopify account and from here you can do everything you need to do to start selling products online.
You’re able to add products to your store right away, customize your online store with a new theme or logo, add your own domain if you already have a website, and on the left hand side you can browse through a variety of different menu options.
Take some time to go through everything on the Shopify page and try to get a feel for how it all works.
After two weeks your trial is going to end.
By this time you hopefully sold some products and if you like how it’s going for you then I recommend upgrading to a better plan.
How to Make Money with Shopify
Now that you’ve gone through the process and set up your Shopify account it’s time to actually start making some money.
There are quite a few different ways that you can make money from Shopify and the easiest is if you already have your own product or service that you’re able to promote and sell.
Basically you’re going to want to add your product or service to your Shopify store and then use a blog, social media, or PPC ads to start driving traffic to the store so that people that are interested in what you’re offering might buy something.
For those of you without a physical product or service already made then you’re going to want to consider a few other methods such as dropshipping or selling t-shirts.
I won’t go into the specific details of how to start dropshipping right now but the way it works is you basically are going to contact different suppliers for a specific product and find ones that are willing to ship their products directly to someone that purchases it through your online store.
The way you’re going to make money this way is by charging more for the product then you actually pay for it and you can get away with the difference by adding value in the form of better customer service, a more user-friendly shopping experience, or doing something else that your competition doesn’t bother doing.
There are also plenty of people making a killing by selling T-shirts and other small clothing items and accessories through Shopify and with this method it’s a good idea to try it using paid traffic that’s targeted to what you’re selling.
Another thing that you can do is find popular products on websites such as AliExpress, list them up with a markup on your Shopify store, and then promote them using Facebook advertising.
The trick when it comes to making money with Shopify is be able to drive targeted and relevant traffic to your online store so that people are visit are more inclined to buy whatever you have for sale.
There are plenty of paid options that you can use for driving traffic, such as advertising online, and if you’re short on cash you can start a blog that will direct its visitors to your online store.
Dropshipping on Shopify
I know that there are a lot of you looking for more information on how to make money with Shopify so I wanted to provide you with a more in-depth guide of one of the great examples that should help you get started selling and making some money.
I plan on focusing on the dropshipping model, at least in this example, because for beginners this is the easiest method and also you can use it to get started right away without having any significant amounts of capital.
Of course you’re going to need to start by heading over to Shopify and if you don’t already have an account then sign up for their free 14-day trial before getting a plan.
Choosing a Product
Once you set everything up with your store it’s time to go ahead and choose a product and niche that you’re going to sell in.
With this method you’re going to want to start with smaller, lower price items that are likely going to somewhere quickly just so that you can get some of those quick wins before moving on to bigger, more expensive items.
Some examples of products that you can target include jewelry, plush toys, lamps, key chains, USB sticks, and anything that’s going to cost you less than $5 on AliExpress.
At this point you’re going to want to familiarize yourself with AliExpress since it is the platform that we will be using to source our products from.
Head on over to AliExpress and start browsing through all of the different products that you can find in the price range that I listed above and to come up with a niche just try to find something that’s currently popular and well-liked by a lot of people.
If you’re having trouble coming up with this specific niche then try to think of some popular TV shows, movies, books, or anything else that people would be interested in buying products related to.
Once you have found a few products then you can start adding them to your store.
How to Add a Product to Shopify
Adding a product to your Shopify store is very easy.
To start, click on Product and then select “Add a Product”.
You need to fill out the title and description accurately and write more than just a few words so that you have a better chance of converting any of the visitors that you get.
You actually want to set the price of the product to $0 and mentioned somewhere that it’s normally priced at a much higher rate.
Also, mention that there’s a limit and only a certain amount available because this will help to make it seem that what the person is getting is a great deal and will be more likely to buy.
You want to do this for about 20 to 30 different products before you start worrying about driving traffic and follow the same guidelines with each product (setting the price to $0).
In just a minute I’ll explain why you aren’t specifically charging any money for the product.
Driving Traffic and Getting Sales
For traffic you’re going to want to use social media, and Facebook specifically.
Set up your Facebook advertising account and make sure to add a credit card that has enough money so that you can spend a little bit on daily advertisements.
Go ahead and create a Facebook page and make sure that you put it under the brand or product sub-category.
Fill that out with all of the information about the product that you’re selling as well as links to your Shopify store.
You really don’t need to spend too much time with this and just make it look like you have a legit Facebook page and that it doesn’t look too shady.
Once you have your Facebook page set up you can go ahead and create your ad and I recommend doing some quick research online to find how to create the best Facebook ads rather than just posting something completely random that isn’t going to convert.
Now here’s the trick:
In the ad you want to mention that the product is free for a limited time only and that you only are asking for help with the shipping.
This is definitely going to get people interested and whatever you’re selling and they’re very likely to visit your site to see the different products that you have on your store,
Because you mentioned that it’s free and that you just need help with shipping, people are going to think that they are getting an amazing deal and will be much more likely to buy something compared to if they were thinking that they were paying full price for it.
Make sure that you target the right market, the specific demographics that are likely going to be most interested in the product that you’re selling, and set a daily Facebook ad budget for just $10 until you start selling more products.
Once you start selling on Shopify more you can increase your daily budget for the advertisements and start making more money overall.
Since the product that you listed is being sold for free then you should start getting orders right away.
What you want to do is set the shipping to be $9.99 and as long as your product is a reasonable price you can make upwards of $9 of profit per each sale.
Once the sales start rolling in you can start to scale up and spend more more money on promoting a product.
Keep in mind that as long as your product is priced at $1 or less and you are charging $9.99 for shipping then you only need to sell 11 or so products to make $100 per day.
These days there are plenty of different methods that you can take advantage of to start selling on Shopify and making money online.
Start by Googling different methods that you can use, reading up on case studies, and even reading the success stories on Shopify’s own blog.
These days it’s really possible to sell anything online and with so many different options available for driving traffic is really no excuse to why you can’t start trying today and start earning money tomorrow.
